Jamaica Plain Adult Learning Program

In the simplest terms our mission is to help adults achieve their High School diplomas and/or learn English and other basic skills. We strive to provide an innovative and learner-centered environment to encourage and support adults in their learning process.

Description:
The Adult Learning Program (ALP) was established in direct response to the demands for basic education, employment-related skill building, and ESOL services among local adults. Our goal is to help students attain the education, skills, and self confidence that will enable them to more fully participate in their communities and in the education of their children, and that will further enhance opportunities for employment, and personal development. In addition, we seek to provide the tools to enable historically disenfranchised individuals and communities, including refugees and immigrants, to more fully access, utilize, participate in, and impact the resources and development of their city and their communities.

The ALP currently has both morning and evening programs and offers 7 levels of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), from basic literacy through high intermediate; plus, three levels of ABE leading up to the GED class as well as an External Diploma Program, all of which provide 8.25 hours of weekly instruction.

Classroom based learning is supplemented by weekly 2 hour volunteer tutoring sessions offered by community members who are trained and supervised by our Volunteer Coordinator. Some tutors also provide assistance in classrooms.

History:
The Adult Learning Program (ALP) is the largest educational program of the The Jamaica Plain Community Centers Inc. (JPCC). JPCC is a non-profit, tax-exempt corporation that has served the residents of Jamaica Plain and other Boston neighborhoods since 1979. It is one of the leading multi-service providers in Jamaica Plain, serving over 60,000 Boston residents annually at its four sites. JPCC provides neighborhood residents opportunities for social, educational, cultural, recreational, vocational, and community development through a diverse range of programming for children, youths, and adults. The ALP began offering adult education classes in 1983 and has served over 3,500 students in the Boston area.
