Uhuru Furniture is a project of the African People's Education & Defense Fund (APEDF). The APEDF strives to develop and institutionalize programs to defend the human and civil rights of the African community and to address the grave disparities in education, health, health care and economic development of the African community.

Description:
Uhuru Furniture is a fundraiser for the African People's Education and Defense Fund. Uhuru Furniture is a volunteer based store in Philadelphia, PA. We resell quality donations of furniture from the Philadelphia community. Volunteers participate in retail work, furniture pick-up, marketing projects, and building community events and forums. Internships are always available. Uhuru Furniture is an example of genuine community economic development for the African community.

History:
Uhuru Furniture is a national chain, raising resources for the APEDF in three cities currently. It began in Oakland, CA, in 1989, where it was originally just a flea market. Stores now exist in Philadelphia, PA, and St. Petersburg, FL, as well as Oakland, CA. In 1994, we set up shop on Spruce St. in Philadelphia, and have been developing our base of donors, shoppers and volunteers ever since.
