Creative Community Connections (CCC), a new AASP program, is offering "TimeSlips" -- an opportunity for creative volunteer service and learning at Cherrydale Health and Rehabilitation Center this summer. CCC is teaming with young adults of the Community Volunteer Network (CVN) in presenting a series of workshops in creative storytelling for residents of Cherrydale.
The initial series begins June 13 and meets for six weeks (two Saturdays and four weekdays), concluding in a planned celebration to honor the creative work produced. Further sessions will be held during the year ahead, dates to be determined based on volunteers' schedules.
TimeSlips is a creative storytelling method that helps people with dementia reaffirm their humanity and better connect with staff, family and friends. Developed by the University of Wisconsin, TimeSlips storytelling workshops are opportunities in which people with dementia can experiment with the fragments of communication (language, sound, and gesture) that they still have available in response to images and open-ended questions.
The process is facilitated by trained volunteers or staff, but the activity is directed by the creativity of the people with dementia themselves. In addition to having fun, participants engage in personal creative expression and often report experiencing the creation of valued social roles.
No experience is needed to participate, but a willingness to engage residents' imaginations, listen to and echo their stories, and have fun in the process will insure a successful outcome for all. A short TimeSlips training will be offered to orient first-time volunteers. You may attend one or more of the sessions as your schedule permits.
