There are a variety of volunteer positions open to interested community members/groups to partner with clients in our Adopt-A-Family program. Volunteers may choose to "adopt" a family for a period of 6-24 months. Usually, these volunteers work through their church, civic association or business in teams of two or more people. Duties may include:
• Making contact with the family and working on building a friendly relationship.
• Helping the family get started in their new apartment by asking their congregation or civic group for donations of needed furniture and household items.
• Introduce clients to their locality (hospitals, emergency services, grocery stores, drug stores)
• Teach navigation and layout of the local roads and public transportation
• Assist with emergency transportation.
• Helping with childcare on emergency basis.
• If appropriate, tutor clients on computer or GED and/or assisting with job search.
• Providing support and encouragement to family throughout their time in AAF.
These are only suggested duties and may be modified according to family needs and resources of adopting agency. The case manager, the volunteer coordinator, and the family work together with the adopting group to determine what assistance would contribute most to the success of the family.
Volunteers must be age 18 and up and will be required to participate in an orientation for this program.
