History:
The National Urban Coalition for Unity and Peace, Inc. (N.U.C.U.P.) is a non-profit, community service organization designed to address the needs of at-risk youth, families and others citizens in urban areas through preventative and support efforts. N.U.C.U.P. was founded in 1986 by James E. Lewis, Jr. in Los Angeles, California for the purpose of addressing the needs of disadvantaged teenagers and help lessen neighborhood tension due to gang participation. Emphasis was placed on drug awareness and prevention since drugs are and remain the number one enemy of all time in America. In addition, the school dropout rate was among teenagers was alarming. As a result, a program was enacted to encourage the continuation of the educational process through alternative methods such as vocational school, night school and a graduate equivalent diploma. It was soon realized that working with teenagers from the ages of fifteen to eighteen was not as productive as desired. Most teenagers had already formed opinions about life and were already greatly influenced by their peers rather than authoritative figures. In July 1988 the founder moved N.U.C.U.P. headquarters to the metro Atlanta area. In March 1989 the organization started using the classroom facilities of St. Mark A.M.E. Church. The focus was then changed to a younger age, ages’ four to twelve. N.U.C.U.P. adopted the motto “It is easier to build a child than to repair an adult”. With the focus on economically disadvantaged youth, several housing complexes were approached to see if they would accept the N.U.C.U.P. concept of drug awareness and prevention. It was accepted and by April 1989, there were sixteen children in the Life Enrichment Experience a “Drug Awareness and Prevention” program. In August 1989, thirteen children were added, and by August 1990 the program had grown to over sixty children ranging in ages from four to fourteen.
From 1992 – 1994 N.U.C.U.P. in conjunction with the East Point Housing Authority implements Drug Elimination Grant. In 1994 N.U.C.U.P. implements first summer day camp at Saint Paul A.M.E. Church for 250 disadvantage youth. From 1995 to 1999 N.U.C.U.P. contracted to implement Camp Fultoneechee South for 60 disadvantage youth by the Office of Children and Youth of the Fulton County Human Services Department. From 1999 to 2004 N.U.C.U.P. operate Safe Haven After-School Tutorial program at Parklane Elementary School. Presently programs are housed at Charles A.
