Furniture Bank Of Metro Atlanta
The Furniture Bank provides free, essential household furniture for individuals and families moving out of homeless shelters, living with HIV/AIDS or fleeing domestic violence situations.
Description:
The Furniture Bank of Metro Atlanta was founded in 1988 in response to the lack of furniture resources for homeless people who secure housing. Before the Furniture Bank, many of these individuals and families had no furniture, and were forced to sleep and eat on the floor. The Furniture Distribution Program guarantees a bed for every member of a client's family and a sofa. Other items are provided such as dressers, lamps, dinette sets, bookshelves, love seats, and coffee tables. On average each household receives 14 pieces of furniture. Also, the Furniture Bank works to provide basic household items to families and individuals through partnerships with local congregations and schools. Individual households, hotels, and furniture companies donate the majority of furniture. The Furniture Distribution Program contributes to the self-sufficiency of Furniture Bank clients by reducing the costs associated with moving into housing, freeing additional income for housing, transportation, and medical needs.
