Our mission at the Task Force for the Homeless is to advocate with and to represent the dignity and rights of people who are homeless in our society toward the goal of preventing homelessness and seeking appropriate and affordable housing and services for all.

Description:
Since it's inception in 1981, the Metro Atlanta Task Force for the Homeless (Task Force) has developed into a 24-hour emergency placement facility for homeless persons in the Atlanta area and throughout Georgia, assisting more than 2,000 homeless people every month find new housing options. It serves as the coordinating agency for services for homeless people and is the organizer of a local coalition of social service providers, advocates, and representatives of the public and private sectors. In Georgia as well as Atlanta, the Task Force is the point agency for advocacy and information on the causes and conditions of homelessness. In addition, Task Force employees serve as shelter coordinators providing linkage between the services provided by the Task Force with those offered by the more than 80 facilities housing the homeless in metro Atlanta. While maintaining homeless persons’ access to emergency shelter, these shelter coordinators provide start-up and ongoing technical assistance to both shelter providers and over 150 agencies providing continuing services to homeless persons.

The Task Force houses many different programs that address homelessness on its various levels from policy work to emergency shelter. Programs of the Task Force include:
24-Hour Homeless Assistance Hotline
Street Outreach and Transportation
AmeriCorps Force and AmeriCorps*NCCC Sponsor
Overflow Shelter and Drop-In Center
Transitional Housing and Resident Volunteers
Day Service Center
Technical Assistance
Coalition Forum

History:
Founded in 1981 and incorporated in 1986, the Task Force for the Homeless is a leading nonprofit agency serving homeless people. It was initiated in 1981 by then-Mayor Andrew Young upon the deaths of 17 homeless men on the streets that winter. The mayor, urged by members of the community of faith, called together leaders in the community to organize a response, the result of which was the Task Force for the Homeless.
