The Study Hall
The mission of The Study Hall is to encourage and empower the Peoplestown community children and families to become productive contributors to society through education and enrichment activities.
Description:
TSH is an exempt from licensure childcare learning center with year round services. Incorporated in 1988 and opening its doors in 1990, TSH is a positive, happy place for the children of the Peoplestown community, with an academic focus. The organization serves Kindergarten through Eighth graders, who are predominately African-American in south Atlanta near Turner Field. TSH’s services can be divided into two categories 1) an after-school program and 2) a summer camp. TSH after-school program operates Monday through Friday from 2:30 PM to 6:30 PM and follows the Atlanta Public School calendar. Staff transports participants in three vans from the seven neighborhood Atlanta Public Schools to the facility. When participants arrive they are offered a snack. Next, divided by grade level, participants go to their classroom and complete their homework assignments. If participants do not have homework, they review reading and math skills. Additionally, scholars spend time outside playing on TSH’s fenced-in playground with a jungle gym, swings, and game field. At the end of the day, scholars are offered a nutritious dinner before being transported home. TSH has five focus areas: academics, cultural enrichment, computer literacy, leadership, and character building. Through these five focus areas; TSH works to grow well-rounded young people.
History:
The Study Hall, founded in 1990, serves Peoplestown, a heavily impoverished neighborhood. Father Austin Ford opened Emmaus House, adjacent to The Study Hall, 30 years ago as a community center offering hope to those who had no where else to turn. The Study Hall grew out of his interest and involvement with the neighborhood children. Although the program concept came out of his work, The Study Hall is an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a separate and independent Board of Directors.
