MUST Ministries

Rooted in the Christian tradition, MUST, Inc. was founded in 1971 to address the basic needs of people in the communities in which it operated. MUST is an organization where people of many faiths come together to respond to God's challenge to minister to others with compassion and love, without judgment of the beliefs, background or circumstances of those who serve or of those being served.

MUST strives to break the cycle of poverty in the community by assessing individual needs and providing programs and services that can improve the quality of life. Our mission is to provide a place where people of all faiths can come together to live out the true meaning of their faiths by offering a refuge where people in need can find help and hope for themselves and their families

Description:
God's People in Action- MUST is a faith based organization that for 31 years has been dedicated to providing services to persons in crisis while maintaining their dignity. MUST is a place where one's faith can be put into action and where we can minister to the poor, the brokenhearted and those who are in crisis - a place where "your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet." Fredrick Buechner

Comprehensive- No other organization offers the same range of services to help people in need: emergency shelter, transitional housing, meals, groceries, clothing, job readiness and placement, substance abuse counseling, financial assistance, children's programs, community support groups, access to free health care, access to affordable housing.

History:
In 1971, a youth worker at Powers Ferry United Methodist Church became aware of a critical need in his Marietta community. Senior citizens in local housing projects had no transportation to get to doctor's appointments or to go to the grocery store. Motivated by his strong faith and applying a common sense approach, the youth worker borrowed a church bus, enlisted others, and began driving the senior citizens to appointments and on important errands.

This action, initiated by the youth worker who became Rev. Wayne Williams, not only made an important contribution to the seniors: It also inspired a growing group of volunteers. Over time, the group adopted its name, Ministries United for Service and Training (MUST), became incorporated, and increased the types of services provided. By the end of the 1970's, MUST was running a food pantry, clothing ministry, soup kitchen and emergency shelter. It also provided camps for troubled children.

The original site is in Marietta. In late 1980's, we established sites in Smyrna and Canton, GA. Over the years, MUST has continued to grow. In 2001, with the help of thousands of volunteers, we served over 25,000 individuals. Today our organization provides a wide array of services directed at breaking the cycle of poverty.
