Imagine that you’re diagnosed with cancer and are told by your doctor that you need to start chemotherapy or other treatment right away. Now imagine that you have no transportation to get you to and from the treatment that will save your life.
People from communities in the Atlanta area volunteer their time to help cancer patients get to hospitals and medical facilities.
“Driving cancer patients is rewarding to the heart and soul -- to see the relief on the faces of clients when they know that someone cares! These cancer patients often have no one else to assist them,” said Teresa Baxter, Road to Recovery volunteer coordinator in Silver Creek near Rome.
“A successful Road to Recovery program is a tremendous asset to the community, and volunteers provide an essential and life-saving service,” said Erin Elliott, the Society’s Transportation Solutions Manager in Metro Atlanta. “They ensure that cancer patients are able to take advantage of the latest medical advancements and receive regular cancer treatments.”
Join this meaningful program and make a positive difference in the lives of those around you.
Volunteers need to be available some time between 7am-6pm Monday through Friday and commit to driving at least once a month. A valid driver’s license, auto insurance, good driving record, and completion of a 1.5-hour training are required. For more information, please contact Erin Elliott, Transportation Solutions Manager, at 404.582.6135 or erin.elliott@cancer.org.
