Danceability, Inc. is a nonprofit dance and movement program for children and adults with special needs. Our mission states:, "danceability is a program for children and adults with special needs utilizing dance and movement to enable and empower students while promoting physical, social, and emotional wellness in a family-focused, peaceful environment.
Description:
Students attend dance classes once a week from September through May. They are placed into classes after having one on one individual placements and are divided into classes based on approximate age, ability and parent/staff schedules in order to make the most successful group dynamic possible. Classes range from groups of five students to private lessons for those that require a one on one individualized routine. The primary focus of each class is to have fun while the dancers learn the basics of dance, musicality, rhythm and routine. danceability, Inc. strives to meet the needs of the individual while still in a cooperative group setting by finding the best modalities to help them meet their goals. However, the benefits of those few things reach far beyond. Dance and movement have the power to facilitate communication beyond words, facilitate socialization, create body awareness, improve flexibility, increase muscle strength, curb negative behaviors, and even help memory. At the end of the season, danceability, Inc. invites students to participate in the annual performance. Dances are choreographed and costumes are designed and selected for those students who desire to perform. Besides an entertaining experience, dancer’s show an increased sense of self esteem as they achieve something few people would ever consider; performing in front of an audience of 400 people. Danceability, Inc. also seeks to help the families of its students by having a small resource center that showcases agencies and services that may help the dancers and their families in all areas of life.
History:
Danceability, Inc. was officially established in July 2007 by Robin Bishop and Christine Kwiatkowski, opened its doors in September 2007 and was granted 501 3c status in October 2008. In that short time, the program has grown to serve over 250 students and has utilized over 100 volunteers. Those who attend the program are challenged with disabilities including, but not limited to; autism, ADHD, cerebral palsy, down syndrome, traumatic brain injuries, angelman’s syndrome and psychiatric disorders.
