Buffalo Urban League
Our Mission
The Mission of the Buffalo Urban League is to assist African Americans and others in the achievement of social and economic equality. We do this through advocacy, research, program services and by promoting communication and understanding among the races.
Description:
The Buffalo Urban League is committed to offering quality services to disadvantaged community members. We have a Youth Dept. with an after school program that offers tutoring in English, Math, Computers, Homework Help, and Career Development for K-12 students. Also, the Buffalo Urban League has services assisting with Housing and Employment, a Multi-Service Center for seniors and has programs in fitness, cooking, crafts, daily lunches, and more. We also have Family Support Services which is an Adoption/Foster Care Program, and Preventive Services which works to ensure child safety, family strengthening, and successful reunification of families.
History:
The Buffalo Urban League, Inc. was established in 1927 by an interracial group of prominent citizens. They rendered Employment, Housing, and Social Services to the African-Americans who migrated from the South to the City of Buffalo, New York. In 1929 we became an affiliate of the National Urban League. We are now one of over 100 affiliates. Through the years, when the needs of Erie County's residents increased, under the direction of NUL, the Buffalo Urban League increased its services by establishing quality programs to address the issues and assist minorities, and other under served people in achieving social and economic equality. At present, the Buffalo Urban League provides services in Employment, Housing, Education and Scholarships, Adoption/Foster Care, Multi-Services to our elders and Prevention and Intensive support. More than 10,000 individuals benefit from our work.
