Roswell Park Cancer Institute
RPCI is dedicated to providing total care to the cancer patient, conducting research into the causes, treatment and prevention of cancer, and educating the public and the next generation of those who study and treat cancer.
Description:
When Dr. Roswell Park founded what is now called Roswell Park Cancer Institute, he recognized that significant advances against cancer would require an institution of scientists and physicians from many different specialties who focused their clinical and intellectual prowess totally on cancer. "The relationship of laboratory work, clinical study and education must be closely associated," he wrote. This innovative idea was the basis for the modern comprehensive cancer center. RPCI was one of the first such centers designated by the National Cancer Institute as the model for the current 37 centers throughout the United States.
RPCI brings together on one campus a staff of 2,000, including physicians, scientists, oncology nurses, allied health professionals and lab technicians, who devote all day, every day to cancer research, patient care, prevention and education. The spirit of collaboration established and nurtured by Dr. Roswell Park continues to be the guiding principle of the Institute. Patients at RPCI are the immediate beneficiaries of the progress made through the collaborative efforts of its faculty, many of whom are internationally known for their contributions.
History:
Founded in 1898 by Dr. Roswell Park, who pioneered the concept of a comprehensive cancer center, Roswell Park Cancer Insitute (RPCI) is the nations first cancer research, treatment and education center. Leading the battle against cancer for over a century, RPCI is the only facility in Western New York to hold the prestigious designation as a National Cancer Istitute Comprehensive Cancer Center, as as a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. These designations recognize RPCI's exemplary leadership role in setting the national standards for cancer care, research, prevention, and education.
