The mission of Literacy Volunteers is to enable Erie County residents to reach personal literacy goals in the areas of Basic Reading skills or English for Speakers of Other Languages.

Description:
Literacy Volunteers trains volunteers as tutors to work one-to-one with adults in the areas of Basic Reading or English for Speakers of Other Languages. Our services are free to adult residents of Erie County. The tutors are asked to volunteer 2 hours a week for a 1 year commitment to meet with a student in the location and time of their choice. If you can not commit to the one year commitment, we have many other opportunities for our volunteers. We are very flexible with scheduling and we can work around your schedule to the best of our ability.

History:
Literacy Volunteers was formed in 1962 in Syracuse, NY as a small grassroots effort to combat illiteracy. Literacy Volunteers started in the Buffalo area in 1965.
