The mission of Jericho Road Ministries is to strengthen the relationships and character of families, children, and individuals through attention to health, wellness, education, and spirituality that is based on mutual understanding, trust, and respect.
Description:
Jericho Road Ministries fulfills their mission through ten established programs, which seek to holistically address the needs of the Family Practice patients and other Buffalo community members, including many refugees to the U.S.
Education
- Westside Read and Play Program increases the school-readiness of toddlers and models positive verbal interaction to their parents, while enhancing language ability.
- Focused Learning for Youth (FLY) helps refugee teens in grades six through eight achieve grade level scholarship before they reach high school.
- Refugee Education Vision assists individuals pursuing higher education or vocational training by defining educational goals and plans and by providing affordable housing.
Economic Support
- Financially Fit offers free, basic financial education on banks, credit, etc. for women
- CityRoots Home Buyers Program partners with a housing agency to assist refugee families in home buying.
- Hope Refugee Sewing Micro-Enterprise teaches basic sewing skills with the end goal that participants start a micro-business to supplement their income.
Health and Basic Needs
- Priscilla Project provides targeted healthcare for medically at-risk mothers through volunteer mentors, educational sessions, and increased health and social services access.
- Diabetes Center partners with local medical providers to assist diabetes self-management.
- Seasons Pantry provides un-met family needs, including infant, school, and cleaning supplies.
- Hope Refugee Drop-In Center provides client-driven case management, advocacy, and interpretation for post-resettlement refugees to address the difficulties of adjustment to living in the U.S.
History:
Jericho Road Ministries, Inc., is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization that was formed in 2003 as a faith-based adjunct to Jericho Road Family Practice. Jericho Road Family Practice has provided safety-net healthcare for a low-income region of Buffalo, NY, since 1997. They currently have a patient base of 20,000 with over 30,000 contacts per year. Jericho Road Ministries is designed to meet holistic needs and facilitate the self-empowerment of residents on the East and West Side of Buffalo, NY. In total, over 1,400 low-income and refugee individuals use our services on a consistent or one-time basis each year; we sustain over 1,000 client contacts per month. Those we serve hail from the U.S., Somalia, Sudan, Burundi, Congo, Ivory Coast, Iraq, China, Burma, Cuba, and more and speak more than fifteen major languages.
