PKD Foundation, Western NY Chapter
The PKD Foundation mission is to promote research to find a cure for PKD (polycystic kidney disease) and improve the care and treatment of those it affects. The Western NY Chapter concentrates on five main mission areas: raising money for PKD research, increasing awareness of PKD, educating the public about PKD, supporting those affected by PKD and lobbying Congress for increased PKD research funding. The biggest chapter event each year is the Walk for PKD, held the third weekend of September.
Description:
The PKD Foundation is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting PKD (polycystic kidney disease) research. The PKD Foundation has national and regional staff that also works to foster public awareness among medical professionals, corporations, foundations, patients and the general public. The PKD Foundation provides the only regular source of PKD information and offers the only complete forum for patient education. Volunteer chapters of the PKD Foundation carry out its mission in across the United States and in several foreign countries.
History:
The PKD Foundation was founded in 1982 in Kansas City, Missouri by Dr. Jared Grantham (a PKD researcher) and Joseph Bruening (whose family members had PKD). The PKD Foundation has grown over the years from an organization funding its first grant of $25,000 for PKD research in 1984 to annually funding millions of dollars of peer-approved research.
