JOB SUMMARY:

The Medical Advocate of the Refugee Resettlement Program is responsible for ensuring that all new arrivals are linked with medical care as required by USCRI. In addition, the Medical advocate will assist clients in linking to a primary care physician, and aid case-managers in meeting urgent medical needs. The Medical Advocate will also assist clients and medical professionals in understanding their rights and responsibilities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Link new arrivals with TB clinic, health screening and primary care physician. meeting the requirements of USCRI
• Maintain close working relationship with staff of local clinics and hospitals
• Work with IIB staff to ensure appointments do not conflict with employment or DSS appointments
• Correspond with local agencies, and other service providers as necessary
• Ensure clients have access to interpreters for appointments, as required by law.
• Visit hospitalized clients and work with hospital staff to ensure cultural needs are being addressed.

Education: Preferably a student enrolled in the medical or human services area

Experience: Experience with diverse cultures, refugee population and/or medical profession is preferred, but not mandatory.

• excellent communication (oral and written) , interpersonal and organizational skills, including time management
• ability to work cooperatively with clients, and IIB staff
• All right with working in a multi-cultural setting and learning to communicate with a clients from a variety of ethnic and religious backgrounds and lifestyles
• Ability to meet short timelines
