Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on September 28, 2009

Science Firsthand connects youth ( 9 - 14 yrs) with compassionate adults to explore the natural urban landscape in their neighborhoods, and do hands on science investigations. Science Firsthand mentors come from all backgrounds, ages and interests. Some have science experience, some have experience with youth, and some realize the need for an adult mentor for children. As they ask questions, discuss solutions and share discoveries, foundations for relationships are built. Teams have planted gardens, dismantled simple appliances, flown kites and much more. Mentor and mentees meet weekly, after school at a
partnering community center. Science Firsthand fosters curiosity, opens opportunities to pursue science careers and enriches after school hours.

Mentors find Science Firsthand enriching as well - “I have learned as much from doing this as they have – about myself and comfort zone and what my challenges are.”

Please inquire about becoming a mentor by contacting Marilyn
Sozanski at First Hand Learning, 831-8722 or
marilyn.sozanski@gmail.com.

Orientation and training are provided by the Science Firsthand staff prior to meeting with students. Mentors are requested to have a background check and fingerprinting, with costs covered by Science Firsthand.
