Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on July 27, 2009

The Westside Read and Play Program offers hope and opportunities for young children in refugee and low-income families by helping prepare them and their parents for school. Home Visitors foster a learning-rich home environment where each child develops a strong foundation for long-term school success. Home Visitors visit children and their parents or guardian in their homes twice per week during the school year. Using a book or toy as the focal point the Home Visitor models simple ways for the parent to develop language, cognitive, and social skills in the child, as well as to enjoy time together. Through friendship and trust, the Home Visitor also acts as a first line of defense against crises, like unemployment, that might rock the foundation of a low-income family. Home Visitors are people who are motivated and energized by their concern for children and their desire to see justice come in broken places. If this describes you, please consider joining us!

Initial training, monthly meetings, and a background check are required. Female volunteers are preferred since most parents or guardians present at the home visits are female.
