First Care:
- Trained by the Case Worker, based on your comfort level and
on the training you will be able to: - Welcome newcomers into our Western New York community.
- Bridging the gap between newcomers and host
communities.
- Aiding in cultural orientation and transitioning.
- Taking clients to appointments such as: medical, social
services and social security. Clerical Assistant:
- Volunteers need to assist with basic clerical duties around the
office.
- Sorting, filing, mailing, contact clients for different
appointments, making copies, and follow up on appointments. Family Mentor:
- Refugee families arrive in the United States and have to learn
English and find a job. They have to acquaint themselves with a new city in a totally foreign culture.
- Every refugee family needs a mentor to help them transition to
life in America.
- As part of your team work you would coach our clients on how
to use the libraries, banks, money value, holiday celebrations (depending on the case), grocery stores and the malls. Estimated time commitment: 8 hours a week for the period of two months. Transportation:
- Appointments need to be made and errands to run for the
refugees.
- Our clients need transportation to get to work, medical and
social service appointments, as well as shopping for daily necessities.
- As newcomers to this country, refugees must also learn
English before they can pass the drivers license exam, and they must save money before they can take on the expense of owning a vehicle.
- Volunteer drivers are vital to helping refugees meet their daily
commitments.
- Ways volunteer drivers can help:
- Offer one day/week or one day/month of transportation
services.
- Teach refugees how to navigate the bus system. This would
require teaching the client which buses to take, reading schedules and maps, learning how to signals the driver to stop, fees, tokens, transfers. Time commitment should be at least two hours per client.
- Accompany clients to medical appointments and help them
navigate the system. Employment Program Assistant:
- Enthusiastic volunteers are needed to assist immigrants and
refugees in obtaining employment.
- This position may include driving clients to and from
appointments, making follow-up phone calls, and assisting clients with employment applications.
- Bilingual skills are helpful, but not necessary.
Presenters/Instructor:
- Volunteers with expertise in certain areas are needed from
time to time to present information during an educational group or training class for the refugees. This may include anything from parenting skills to first aide to quilting.

Set Up Team: - Volunteers are needed to help with the initial set up of a
house or an apartment before the new refugee(s) arrive.
- This includes cleaning, moving furniture and household
items in.
- Team is required to move fast and act on short notice as we
often get less than a weeks notice before the refugee arrives.
- This position is on an as needed basis.
Financial Literacy Volunteer: - Many of our refugee clients have never handled money before,
much less opened a bank account or dealt with the concept of savings.
- The IIB needs people who are interested in assisting with one-
on-one budgeting sessions for our clients, or conducting financial workshops. School Enrollment:
- Enrolling school aged children into school programs.
- Volunteers' duties include making appointments for
Language Assessment, bus transportation and teaching them about the school bus system, training is mandatory for this position.
- Estimated time commitment: 8 hours a week for the period
of two months.
For all of our volunteer positions we prefer a commitment of at least two months. However if you would like to volunteer with the International Institute but can not commit to this time frame, we can discuss this further. This opportunity is sponsored by: International Institute of Buffalo
