Paralegal / legal assistant: An intern or volunteer acting in the capacity of a paralegal or legal assistant must have completed at least one year of law school, or have equivalent practical training. This position also requires signing a client confidentiality form. This position requires a minimal ability to work with Microsoft Word, Excel, and basic office equipment. This position requires working with client files, clients in person and on the phone, answering the phone for the legal department, file maintenance, keying in applications, attending and participating in file reviews, making file notes, prepare documents for mailing including certified mail and FedEx as well as .pdf’ing and shredding of documents. This position also provides opportunities to accompany our immigration lawyers and accredited representatives to court or to USCIS interviews with clients, and accompanies our DV advocate to the Family Justice Center of Erie County to meet with potential clients.

In the event an intern or volunteer has met the minimum qualifications, but is unable to work a minimum of 20 hours a week, they may still intern or volunteer in the legal department, but involvement in case files will involve keying in applications, client letters, client phone calls, preparation of documents for mailing certified mail, regular mail and FedEx, and file maintenance, including shredding, .pdf’ing of documents.

File maintenance Assistant: We are always in need of someone to perform filing, cross-check our file list with the physical files in the filing cabinets, make copies, .pdf files, shred files, make all necessary changes to update the file list. This position also requires signing a client confidentiality form.
