Volunteer Opportunity Details:
As a volunteer tutor, your role would be one-to-one tutoring with a Literacy Volunteers student for at least two (2) hours per week, for one (1) year. We train you how to teach adult students and then match you with a student who lives near you and has the same schedule availability so that it's convenient to meet at a local library or other public place. The focus of the training is to show you what to expect when working with an adult and how to draw up a lesson plan and curriculum. These trainings are generally held every month and last 12 or 15 hours, usually split into 3 or 4 sessions; see our Tutor Training workshop schedule at www.literacybuffalo.org for dates and times. Once matched, the tutor and student work toward the student's individual goal - the lessons are based on what the student wants or needs to learn. Tutors should be over 18-years old, and have a high-school diploma or GED. Tutors must agree to attend all 3 or 4 sessions of our tutor workshop training and agreed to meet with a student at least 2-hours a week for a one year commitment. We have additional volunteering opportunities if this commitment cannot be completed. This opportunity is sponsored by: Literacy Volunteers of Buffalo & Erie County, Inc.
