Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on November 17, 2009

Children's Services - Living Unit 806 patients range in age from 4 - 11 years of age. The patients are admitted from a ten county area with Erie County providing the largest amount of referrals. Volunteers will assist the members of this treatment team providing care to our children and their families. Services provided to the children and their families receiving care from the Unit include Psychiatric, Pediatric, Psychological, Social, Nursing, Recreational, Occupational, Educational, Psycho-educational, Nutritional, Pharmacy, Religious, Vocational Rehabilitation, etc. Volunteers are needed in a variety of roles to assist the staff from these various programs.

Children's Services Volunteer opportunities include mentoring, reading stories, arts & crafts, recreation activities, providing musical lessons, teaching in our education classes, providing child care during family sessions, etc. Volunteers on this Unit find this to be a rewarding as well as an educational experience.

Volunteers must participate in an interview with the Coordinator of Volunteer Services. Documentation must be provided at the time of the interview by the volunteer such as providing two references, photo identification (such as a driver's license), providing a copy of the potential volunteer's past immunizations, completing a "State Central Register Database Check" etc. After wards, a tour of the facility will be given. Once the references are completed and the Database Check has been returned to say that the potential volunteer has not been the subject of an indicated case of child abuse and maltreatment as defined in accordance with the provisions and limitations of section 424-a of the Social Services Law the volunteer is placed with a competent mentor/supervisor. A thorough orientation is done with the Coordinator of Volunteer Services concerning the mission, vision, and important policies and procedures regarding safety, HIPAA, confidentiality, infection control, dress code, patient safety, etc.

Once the volunteer feels competent in their knowledge of these policies, staff members from the Children's Services department will then provide a tour and orientation to the Unit's policies and procedures. Volunteers must be able to work alongside staff, learn from their talents, be competent and dependable, and be able to accept staff's guidance.

Children's Services Volunteer opportunities include mentoring, reading stories, arts & crafts, recreational activities, providing musical lessons, teaching in our educational class rooms, providing child care during family sessions, etc.
