Compass House provides excellent internship and volunteer opportunities for positive community members who want to work with adolescents. At the Emergency Shelter, we can offer direct service experience working with the youth in our care. As a 24-hour facility, there are volunteer shifts available 7 days a week, from 11:00 am - 11:00 pm. The shifts are 11 a.m.-3 p.m., 3 p.m. -7 p.m. and 7-11 p.m. The atmosphere at Compass House follows a youth development model and is non-authoritarian and non-judgmental. Volunteers have the opportunity to assist with meal preparation, get involved with recreational activities, tutor, go on field trips, (sports activities, museums, zoo, etc.)and learn to work with adolescents in a supportive and supervised environment. Internship and volunteer opportunities are also available in our business office. For additional information on working with the business office, please contact Michelle Moore at 886-1351. At the Resource Center, we are interested in volunteers or interns to work with the Independent Living Counselor, running groups and assisting clients with case direction goals. Interns with prior experience in Human Services, or in their Junior or Senior year of college have the opportunity of working with a case manager. This experience may include assisting the Case Manager advocating for youth at public assistance, in court, with apartment searches, job searches, learning how to do intake assessments, etc. Formal Volunteer Training and background checks are required and provided for all interns and volunteers. In addition, on-going on-the-job training and supervision is provided. Compass House provides internship opportunities through all the WNY Universities and Colleges.
All volunteers must be interested in working with young people, serving as role models. Volunteer training is required. Due to the age of our clients, we regret that we are unable to provide direct-service internship or volunteer opportunities to High School students. We would welcome their assistance in our business office. This opportunity is sponsored by: Compass House
