A docent is a volunteer teacher and tour guide who spreads the Zoo's message of conservation and education throughout Western New York. Docent responsibilities include acting as Zoo tour guides, interacting with zoo visitors, conducting live animal presentations, and participating in educational outreach throughout the community. Two orientation sessions will be held to share what being a Zoo Docent is all about. These information sessions will be held at the Buffalo Zoo (in the Education Department) on Saturday, July 18,2009 from 10.00a.m. to 12:00p.m. and Saturday, August 15, 2009, from 10:00a.m.to 12:00p.m. If you are interested in attending one of these sessions, please request an application and sign up by calling Maureen Pantera, Buffalo Zoo Volunteer Coordinator, at 995-6132.

Becoming a Buffalo Zoo docent is a serious commitment and a rewarding journey. To become a Docent, you must be at least 21 years of age and interested in both animals and the environment. Public speaking is required. Training for the 2009 class will take place on Saturdays, this Fall, from September 26, 2009 through January 16, 2010. Classes run each Saturdays, 9:30a.m. to 3:30p.m., except November 28, December 26 & Jan. 2, 2010.
