The mission of the sanctuary is to conserve birds of prey worldwide by providing leadership in raptor conservation science and education, and by maintaining Hawk Mountain Sanctuary as a model observation, research and education facility.

Description:
Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is a 2225 acre refuge for birds of prey and other wildlife, with 8 miles of hiking trails and a native plant garden. Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is open all year, but is most famous for its fall raptor migration where 16 species of birds of prey can be seen. Education programs are presented on weekends in spring and fall.

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year and is particularly in need of Bookstore/Gift Shop and Keeper of the Gate volunteers.

Bookstore volunteers assist bookstore staff with merchandise/membership sales and provide information to visitors. Keeper of Gate volunteers check member cards and tickets. They also promote and sell memberships and provide information to visitors at trail entrance.

Education Volunteers are needed for Raptor Challenge, our new program which brings raptors into third and fifth grade classrooms in the Lehigh Valley, Reading, and Tamaqua School Districts. Assistance is needed with classroom presentations in fall and field trips in the spring.

Throughout the year Hawk Mountain has additional opportunities for volunteers to assist with visitor services, buildings and grounds maintenance, and education. Please view opportunities for specific times and further details.

History:
Hawk Mountain Sanctuary was founded in 1934 by conservationist Rosalie Edge as the the world's first refuge for birds of prey, when she stopped the shooting of migrating hawks from the top of the Kittatinny Ridge. Hawk Mountain has the longest running dataset of hawk migration annual counts in existence. Today, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association is the oldest and largest member-supported raptor conservation organization in the world.
