Agency Details:
National Marrow Donor Program
The National Marrow Donor Program is a non-profit organization dedicated to making transplant possible for patients from every racial and ethnic community. We work to provide hope and deliver a cure to all patients in need. Through partnerships with organizations, more volunteers step forward, more resources are available to patients, and more advances are made in the science of transplant.
Description:
On any given day, more then 6,000 men, women and children are searching the NMDP registry for a life-saving donor. Although millions have joined the NMDP Registry, there are still not matched donors to meet the needs of all patients, especially patients from racially and ethnically diverse communties.
History:
The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1986 and based in Minneapolis, Minnesota that operates the Be The Match RegistrySM of volunteer hematopoietic cell donors and umbilical cord blood units in the United States. The Be The Match registry is the world's largest hematopoietic cell registry, listing more than 7.5 million individuals and more than 100,000 cord blood units. Hematopoietic cells from NMDP donors or cord blood units are used to transplant patients with a variety of blood, bone marrow or immune system disorders. As of January 2009, the NMDP had facilitated more than 35,000 transplants worldwide.
