Description:
Wernersville State Hospital is a nonprofit facility operated by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare and accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. The hospital provides extended inpatient psychiatric treatment with an emphasis on recovery/rehabilitation for consumers residing in Berks, Lebanon,York-Adams and Lancaster Counties in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
History:
Wernersville State Hospital was built in 1893. The area at the base of the South Mountain was selected because of the resorts on the mountain. People came from Washington, Philadelphia and Baltimore for the air and the water at the resorts. The thought was, if the air and the water on the mountain was healthy the same must be true for the area selected for the hospital.
