Like speaking to groups? You can help people learn how to prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies by becoming a Community Disaster Educator. These valuable volunteers give presentations to groups and organizations throughout Berks County that encourage people to prepare for a disaster. Emphasis is placed on creating a family disaster plan and preparing a disaster supplies kit. Each presentation can last anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes. This is a great opportunity for teachers or instructors, or anyone who enjoys speaking to groups about invaluable information! Volunteers should have some experience or interest in public speaking. Current credentials as an instructor or teacher in any discipline is a plus. Experience in disaster relief/emergency response is also helpful! Volunteers should plan to attend a (free!) workshop for the Development of Community Disaster Education Presenters on Saturday, March 31st, 2007, from 9 am to 5 pm at the Berks County Chapter. The workshop will provide background information and support, particularly on ways to overcome disaster denial issues to motivate individual and family disaster preparedness actions. The workshop does NOT teach platform presentation skills; rather, it focuses on how to choose appropriate messages for target audiences and select materials that convey those messages. |
