To assist Families, Caregivers and Individuals whose life experience includes living with a persistent mental illness. To help them acquire and use available supports and skills necessary to manage their symptoms and return to the community and find success, hope and meaning in the role and environment of their choice.

Description:
Mental Illness is a term that is used to describe a group of biologically based brain disorders which include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety disorders.

We offer the following programs:

Open Support Group meetings every Sunday from 2:30-4:00 p.m. at the Faye Morton Consumer and Family Center located on the lower level of the Wendell Building at Eastern state Hospital.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness( NAMI) Family to Family Education Course, which is a series of 12 classes for family members of persons with suffering with Mental Illness. The next free course offering February 2010.

Suicide Prevention and Awareness for Adolescents

Multicultural Action Committee Community Outreach efforts in both the African American and Latino Communities.








History:
NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Lexington was started in 1979 (as BAMI). In 1983 the group incorporated and became a 501(c) (3) tax exempt, non-profit and member of the NAMI National and State Organizations.(Source: NAMI Lexington A History and Annual Overview, 2008)
