The mission of the Clark County Association for Handicapped Citizens (CCAHC) is to advocate and provide programs for children and adults who are considered at-risk or who have mental, physical, developmental, and/or learning disabilities. In addition, we strive to provide support and information to individuals, families, and the community about disabilities and appropriate programs.
Description:
CCAHC has two programs: Kentucky STRIDE and the Early Childhood Development Center
Kentucky S.T.R.I.D.E. offers specialized therapeutic recreational services that improve the quality of life for adults with disabilities, as well as promote the clients self-esteem, independence, and dignity. S.T.R.I.D.E. coordinates specialized programs for adults with disabilities and enabling them to be informed citizens who are aware and take advantage of all the resources in their area that will serve their needs. In addition, S.T.R.I.D.E. serves as a clearinghouse of information related to supported employment, self-advocacy, disability rights, and other available services for families of adults with disabilities. S.T.R.I.D.E. combines recreational activities and specialized programming to further the clients community involvement, health and wellness, and social and emotional well-being. We incorporate activities of daily living into our programming and work on social and technical skills that will enable our clients to be prepared to volunteer, hold jobs, become more independent, and remain active in the community. Furthermore, while these individuals are obtaining necessary skills to enter and remain in the community, their families benefit from respite time. It is our intent to allow opportunities for family members to take part in the Winchester community as well by working, volunteering in civic groups, and becoming an active part in the development of the S.T.R.I.D.E. program.
ECDCs mission is to advocate and provide programs for children and adults who are at risk or who have mental, physical, developmental, or learning problems, as well as to provide support and information to individuals, families and the community about disabilities and appropriate programs. ECDC advocates and provides programs for children from birth to five years who have these needs. It also provides support and information to individuals, families and the community about disabilities and appropriate programs. Our program intent is to provide early intervention to young children in order to help them become more independent successful citizens. It is the intent of the program to help facilitate a smooth transition to public school and become successful life long learners.
History:
CCAHC began serving children with disabilities in 1965 to promote the general welfare of children with mental retardation and physical handicaps. The first program began in 1966 as a day training program for school-aged children who did not have a place in public education. For the past thirty-seven years, CCAHC has provided a preschool program for children with disabilities 3-5 years of age. In 1999, we began to offer services for children from birth to three years of age.
With continuing changes in legislation, the Association began to offer programs for adults with disabilities. In the fall of 2000, STRIDE (Supporting Therapeutic Recreation for Individuals with Disabilities Everyday) became a reality. Since October of 2000, 395 programs have been offered for adults with disabilities.
