The Arboretum, State Botanical Garden Of Kentucky
Logo

The Arboretum celebrates nature, fosters an understanding of relationships between humans and their natural world, provides cultural opportunities for the community center for environmental education, horticulture, and urban forest renewal. The Arboretum emphasizes research on the environment and attention to conservation issues.

Description:
The Arboretum has a "Walk Across Kentucky" which has the trees and plants native to the 5 geophysical regions of the Bluegrass state. Also in the Arboretum are the woods, demonstration gardens, and our newest attraction - the rose garden. Volunteers are active in a wide range of tasks, maintaining the surrounding gardens as well as planning programs and receiving guests. Our Arboretum strives to enhance personal development through lifelong learning for visitors, children, and their teachers. The Arboretum's grounds are open to the public to use for passive recreation.

History:
In 1983, the Board of Trustees of the University of Kentucky approve the preservation of 100 acres for an Arboretum. In 1991, Friends of the Arboretum was established. Friends raise funds and solicit members to assist in the development of the Arboretum. In 1998, during the Arbor Day celebration, the ribbon was cut on the Walk Across Kentucky. March 2000, Governor Patton signed the bill introducing the Arboretum as the Official State Botanical Garden of Kentucky. In 2002, the Dorotha Smith Oatts Visitor Center was opened to the public. Visitation is estimated at over 70,000 persons each year.
