     Adopt-A-Plot for Roses Participants

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on May 15, 2009

PURPOSE:
Care for an assigned plot throughout the growing season. The primary assignment is deadheading, the frequent removal of spent blooms. This stimulates most rose bushes to produce more flowers in a shorter time. Another important duty is weeding. Deadheading and weeding keep the rose gardens well groomed and neat. Most importantly, it enhances the beauty and health of the Arboretum rose gardens.

QUALIFICATIONS

·Be physically capable of performing the expected duties.
·Have an interest in caring for roses and expanding your knowledge of all phases of rose culture.
·Attend the Volunteer Orientation and specific training sessions geared to roses throughout the season.

EXPECTATIONS

·The Adopt-a-Plot Chair will contact volunteers mid-winter to assign the plots. Priority is given to the previous year’s “adopter”. An individual or group may adopt a plot.
·We expect the “adopter” to deadhead weekly during the flowering season. Remove only discolored flowers and blooms that have dropped their petals.
·Weeds in your plot should also be removed periodically. This could require weekly attention during periods of rapid weed growth.
·Volunteers who cannot meet their weekly assignment should contact the Adopt-A-Plot Chair so that another volunteer may fill in.
·Deadheading and weeding are the minimal requirements. Volunteers will also be given the opportunity to learn and participate in mulching, fall and late winter pruning, and other cultural practices.
·Keep a record of the amount of time you have volunteered.
·Contact Tim Phillips or the Adopt-a-Plot Chair if you have questions or concerns. Tim Phillips is responsible for spraying, watering and fertilizing the rose gardens. He will spray on Sunday or Monday nights (so weekend workers will have minimal exposure to any pesticides), using the least toxic pesticides that are effective, and rarely spraying with insecticides.
