PURPOSE: This two-mile pathway winds through a diverse plant collection that provides an introduction to the natural history and ecology of our beautiful state. The Walk has a growing collection of native trees, shrubs, vines, grasses, sedges, wildflowers, ferns, and mosses that represent the flora of seven distinct regions of Kentucky. There are not only hundreds of individual species, but also representations of plant communities, or ecosystems, illustrating various types of forests, savannahs, and grasslands. The Walk Across Kentucky brings together a variety of fields, such as ecology, horticulture, forestry, geology, landscape design, and history. The Arboretum’s long term goal is to cultivate exhibits that will help visitors better understand the essential natural components of our “home place”, and help future generations better understand how to live on this land.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPECTATIONS: ·Volunteers can contribute in a variety of ways, depending on interests, skills, and physical abilities. ·Opportunities are available to adopt an area similar to those with the rose garden or horticulture gardens. ·Participate in group activities that include every aspect of gardening e.g., design, seed collection, plant propagation, garden maintenance, sign and label maintenance, interpretation, and photography, to name but a few.
