Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on November 15, 2009

Come help us create "talking books" using everyday tools! Adapted digital books will be placed in our Library for loan to families, teachers and therapists serving young children with disAbilities to have access to literacy.

You may select which of the 17 steps you would like to perform in creating an adapted digital book for young children with disAbilities: acquire books, grab data for our database, scan book into computer using digital scanner (just like using a copier!), crop/rotate images, record audio (well some one has to read the book--we all know a drama queen or king who would be great at this!!), place cleaned images into PowerPoint slide show, create basic comprehension/assessment questions, create visual language supports using a specialized computer program (piece of cake!), quality checks thru out process, prepare books for distribution (burn CDs, laminate documents, package, etc), and inventory.

We utilize an "assembly line approach" to creating our books. We will walk through the process and help you select a specific task to get you started. We have even created step by step directions with illustrations for most tasks so that each step is simple to perform and help you learn a new skill. Don't let the word "technology" intimidate you...this is a great project helping our kids overcome reading barriers! We have 6,000 books waiting --we're sure you will find your favorites waiting for your touch!
