Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on July 7, 2009

Clerical/Office Support: Office volunteers are needed to help staff the AVOL office between the hours of 9:00am and 5:00pm. Volunteer duties include answering the phone, photocopying, filing, and helping with various small projects. Shifts are scheduled based on hours volunteers are available to work. Training is provided.

Transportation:Volunteers are needed to help transport clients to and from doctors appointments and to run errands (grocery shopping, Wal-mart, bank, etc.). Most appointments are during the day, although volunteers are often utilized in the evening to help run errands. Some clients may need volunteers to remain with them during doctors appointments, while others may simply need to be dropped off and then picked up after the appointment. Training is provided.

Information Tables: Volunteers are needed to staff information tables at health fairs, community events, etc. Volunteers may be responsible for distributing literature, the sale of ribbons or other AVOL items. A basic knowledge of the agency is required, as well as a basic understanding of HIV/AIDS. Training is provided.

Speakers Bureau: AVOL provides speakers that cover all of the state of Kentucky to talk about all aspects of HIV/AIDS. HIV+ speakers are also needed to talk about living with HIV/AIDS. Training is provided.

Care giving Teams: The Care giving Program is designed to bring together the interests, talents and services of volunteers and HIV/AIDS individuals in the community. Caregivers work in teams of two or more and help clients with tasks such as errands, light housekeeping, social visits, phone visits, and transportation. Time commitment for this program is 2-3 hours per week for a minimum of 3-6 months. Care giving teams are assigned to clients at the Solomon House, Rainbow Apartments, or to clients in the community. Training is provided.

AIDS Walk For Life: The Walk for Life is held each spring and is AVOL's largest fundraiser. We encourage individual, team and general community involvement. Training is provided.

Fund raising: Fund raising efforts by or on behalf of AVOL happen sporadically throughout the year. Help with fund raising efforts is always needed. Volunteers are called as soon as AVOL is aware of upcoming events. Volunteer duties vary according to events. Training is provided.

Training is required for all AVOL volunteer opportunities. Every volunteer is provided with a basic training including HIV/AIDS 101. Other volunteer opportunities including the Speakers Bureau and Care Giving Team require additional specialized training provided by AVOL.
