Volunteer tax preparers will electronically prepare and file taxes for qualifying families at free tax sites in Lexington through the Central Kentucky Economic Empowerment Project (CKEEP.) You do not need to be an accountant or a CPA to volunteer. Volunteers are asked to volunteer on a regular basis over a 10 week period (February 1 -April 15) for at least two hours a week. There are nine different tax sites throughout Lexington that are in need of volunteers.
Volunteers will receive free IRS trainings in January and are required to pass a test at the end of training before being able to prepare returns. Training consists of two four-hour classes for basic training and an additional four hours for the intermediate level. A refresher course of four hours will be offered to returning volunteers. There will also be computer lab times available throughout January for additional practice. (Each training will be offered twice to accommodate most individual’s schedules. Dates have yet to be determined but they will be in early January.)
