The American School for the Deaf serves the deaf and hard of hearing community as a multifaceted innovative institution dedicated to the development of intellect and the enhancement of quality of life, producing educated and self-directed citizens. The American School for the Deaf will be the premier comprehensive center providing education and resources for deaf and hard of hearing individuals, their families and educational partners in Connecticut and beyond.
Description:
The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is a primary and secondary school for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Other community services include educational and audiological services to public schools, early intervention for infants and toddlers who are deaf, occupational training, employment supports, and independent living supports for deaf adults, and community sign language classes. ASD also runs Camp Isola Bella, a residential summer camp for children who are deaf or hard of hearing, and PACES, a residential program for people who are deaf and who have mental health needs.
History:
The American School for the Deaf (ASD), founded in 1817, is the oldest special education school in the Western Hemisphere and the only school in Connecticut exclusively devoted to the education of deaf and hard of hearing children.
