Organized Parents Make A Difference, Inc. (OPMAD)

To empower and unite parents city-wide, to meet the academic, social, cultural, creative, and physical needs of children through parent-driven extended day programs that nurture and encourage responsible citizens.

Description:
OPMAD provides a wide range of after school enrichment activities which include, recreational, creative & cultural arts, academic, peer mediation, and life skills. One of our goals is to offer one-on-one academic help during homework time. Tutoring is one of our many opportunities available at this time.

It is OPMAD's top priority to provide safe, age-appropriate, developmentally based activities that are fun and meaningful. OPMAD serves children ages 4-16. Parents are encouraged and trained to be involved in all phases of program design and implementation.
Participating schools are: Annie Fisher, Batchelder, Kennelly, & Noah Webster.

History:
Organized Parents Make A Difference, Inc. (OPMAD) is a non-profit community organization. OPMAD was created by a group of parents in 1992 concerned about the lack of safe and well-supervised programs during after school hours. They developed a Board of Directors, by-laws, and its mission. With our first funding from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, OPMAD was born. The organization has four participating schools in after school & summer programs.

Organized Parents Make A Difference, Inc. (OPMAD) 5 Overall Experience    Experience rating
Volunteering with OPMAD has been fantastic! The program offers Hartford children the opportunity to participate in fun, educational afterschool activities!

OPMAD offers a wide variety of afterschool classes for elementary school children, with the first session running from 3:00 to 4:30, and then the second from 4:30 to 6:00. I feel this extended afterschool program not only enriches the lives of the children who participate, but it also allows their parents to not feel they have to rush from work or cut their hours to pick up their children from school at 3:00. I have taught a cooking class at OPMAD for the last two years and it has been a heartfelt experience. I will be returning in the fall to teach my third session, and am looking forward to it!
