The Mission of the Hartford Neighborhood Centers, Inc is to be an educational, cultural, social and recreational "safe haven" of opportunity for the diverse ethnic populations of Greater Hartford area. Through collaboration and cooperation, we strive to provide quality experience and activities for youth, adults and the elderly.
Description:
Programs and Services: Youth Outdoor Enrichment & Recreation - Increases youth discover and learning about the outdoors; to offer a safe environment for play. Teen college/Career Planning Program - Provides assist teens in developing a better knowledge and understanding of techniques to select colleges and vocational training schools, including financial aid and developing a college/career plan. Youth "Self Discipline" Martial Arts Program - Program is designed to provide youth with a positive outlet during crucial adolescent development. Youth Arts Recreation & Education Program - Program provides youth with an opportunity to learn, the basic instruction in art. Youth will gain knowledge in the concepts of primary colors and complete art & crafts projects on a weekly basis. Afterschool Computer Awareness Program - This program provides basic computer literacy and software. Girl Scout Program - Designed to provide cultural and recreational activities for girl's ages 6 to 13. Increases positive group sharing experiences and carer exploration opportunities. Parents Club - To develop involvement for neighborhood parents to become active in the grouth and development for their children and encourage participation in agency programs. Afterschool Homework Tutorial - Program designed to improve study skills and subject grades for students' grades 1 - 7. Young Sunflowers Program - Teaches young girls the importance of culltural heritage and pesonal hygiene. It also teaches young girls how to cook. Foodshare & emergency Food Pantry Daily Living Essentials - To provide emergency food supplies, demonstrate techniques for reduced income food purchase. Cammunity Based Services to the Elderly - Senior self-improvement with self-esteem and pesonal enhancement skills. Provides nutrition guielines and information to increase seniors' level of knowledge about foods, health and safety. Intergenerational Summer Camp, recreation for Adults 55 and older; to share summer experiences with seniors and teens together in a camp setting. Computer Education and Employent Placement Program - to provide basic and intermediate compter instruction and employment placement activities. Child Development Center - state license facility for children ages 3-5 provides a learning environment for children's transistion in Kindergarten. Camp Hi Hoti - a 300 acre camp located in Hebron, CT
History:
Founded in 1872 by Mrs. Samuel Colt, Mrs Sidney Cowen, Mrs Henry Robinson, Ms. A.P. Hyde, Ms. Elizabeth Lee Sluyter, and others. (129 - 131 Market Street). Ms. Sluyter's objective was to equip and encourage people to work so that they might earn what they need and thereby gain the satisfaction and self respect that flowed from that. Also anticipating the settlement house philosophy of havng dedicated workers live among the poor and disadvantage to help them improve themselves and their economic condition.
In 1956 the Boards of the Union Settlement and North end Community Center combined to form a single entity under the name Hartford Neighborhood Centers.
