Description:
The goal of My Sisters' Place is to make a difference in lives of the homeless. We are committed to breaking the cycle of homelessness by providing housing and supportive programs. One major goal is empower the clients to achieve independent living status. Through group activities, training and the support of their case managers we help them come to terms with the issues that contributed to their homelessness. Additionally, we help them acquire life skills necessary to reestablish themselves in the community. Our agency encompasses fourteen different programs addressing the issue of homelessness with a variety of populations. These include three different housing sites. As a nonprofit agency with limited funding and a small staff, we are very dependent on volunteers to help us achieve our goals.

History:
In the early years of the 1980's a group of social service providers recognized the need for servicing homeless women and their children. In 1981 they incorporated as a non-profit unaffiliated agency under the name of My Sisters' Place. They developed a three-fold plan to address homeless issues. The first phase was to open an emergency shelter. The second phase was to provide "second stage" housing. The third stage would be the development of a multipurpose center. The emergency center was opened in January of 1983 at 102 Capen Street. In January of 1988 we received our first funding as a member of the United Way of the Capital Area. In 1990 an old factory at 102 Pliny Street was converted into 19 furnished apartments. This is the home of our Transitional Housing Program. In the late 1990's three programs, funded by the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, were added. These programs are Supportive Housing, Housing Coordination, and Residential Support. The Supportive Housing facility, known a Mary Seymour Place Apartments, is located on the corner of Capen and Main Streets. Construction of this facility was completed in late 1997. We now have a total of fourteen programs, and are constantly in the process of adding more.
