Agency Details:
YWCA of the Hartford Region
The YWCA of the Hartford Region is a membership organization whose mission is to empower women and girls and eliminate racism.
Description:
The YWCA of the Hartford Region provides advocacy for issues important to women and girls regardless of racial, ethnic or social status. They also provide valued programs and services such as childcare, camp, housing, teen leadership, financial literacy, sexual assault crisis counseling and child abuse prevention to Hartford and 30 surrounding suburban communities.
History:
The YWCA of the Hartford Region was founded in 1867 to assist young working women, "alone and unprotected, without homes, seeking to enter the precarious path of economic independence, beset by the temptations and pitfalls of urban life." While our mission and goals have remained the same throughout the years, our programs and services have changed to accommodate the specific needs of the community at any given time. The YWCA is responsible for helping to shape the workforce for women in Hartford County by teaching young women job skills, grammar, bookkeeping, and health education; and by providing them with a place to stay in the city of Hartford. The YWCA continues to provide similar opportunities to women and girls in the Hartford area.
