Family Services: Teen and Young Parent Support, the Parkville Family Center and Nurturing Families home visiting/ Nurturing Parenting classes.
History:
Family Life Education was established in 1987 as a community-based program for youth and families, including teen and young parents, and their children in response to a census conducted in the Frog Hollow neighborhood of Hartford that revealed a very large number of single, teenage mothers, primarily Hispanic, living in impoverished conditions and without adequate services for themselves or their children. The program was designed with input from several young mothers and continues to seek participant input in program design. In 1988, the program incorporated as a private non-profit organization with 501(c)(3) status. Since 1990 the agency has been located at 39 Grace Street in the former Our Lady of Sorrows School building with several large rooms for programming including an adult learning classroom with 4 computers; two well-equipped childcare rooms with dramatic play, block area, art/science area, infant area and reading/group area; and a kitchen for family cooking sessions. One of the childcare rooms has equipment for gross motor activities including children's ride-on toys, large balls and a climbing gym.
