The mission of The Open Hearth is to provide a caring community environment which supports the homeless in their efforts to restore their self respect, dignity and self sufficiency. The Open Hearth meets the basic needs of its residents by providing food, clothing shelter and work therapy.
Description:
The Open Hearth Association operates an Emergency Shelter, a Transitional Living Program and a Home Ownership Program for homeless men in the Greater Hartford area. Residents are required to work in-house for 40 hrs/wk. at our wood yard, or in food service, maintenance or special projects. Based on the recovery plan that each resident develops with his counselor, job training or search and/or vocational or educational training are the focus of the second phase of the individualized recovery program.
History:
The Open Hearth Association, Inc. was founded in 1883 and is the oldest continuously operating shelter on the East Coast. It was established as a mission by some of Hartford's civic and religious leaders and evolved into an emergency shelter and a structured, long term residential recovery program
