Volunteers in Psychotherapy (VIP) is an innovative nonprofit organization in the Greater Hartford area through which people, regardless of finances or health insurance status, can earn therapy for themselves or their families. VIP provides psychotherapy that is strictly private and of reasonable duration, for no-fee or a low-fee, to clients who agree to privately provide ongoing independent volunteer work elsewhere, to the community nonprofit or charity of their choice (four [4] hours of volunteering is required to earn each therapy session). For example, in exchange for substantial hours of documented volunteering at a hospital, soup kitchen, nursing home or youth program, people can earn strictly private therapy with one of our licensed practitioners. VIP was founded by a Board of psychologists and nonprofit specialists in 1998, based on a pro bono pilot program dating back to 1997. Our Boards (Board of Directors and Advisory Board) now also include psychotherapists, experts in publicity, communications and nonprofit functioning, psychiatric consumer/survivors, nurses, educators, psychology professors and civil liberty experts. VIP could use additional volunteers who might consult with us because of their support for our service to the community. We have an informal Advisory Board of people who have expertise in public relations, computer and internet skills, nonprofit experience, legal and accounting expertise, etc. Please contact us [(860) 233-5115] if you would like to discuss ways in which you might help us to publicize our organization, increase outreach to relevant community groups, increase our fundraising ability, publicize our yearly free lecture or film events [done in recent years in collaboration with Psychology Departments at Trinity College, University of Hartford, and CCSU], or to suggest any other resources or ideas which might help to strengthen VIP, or help us to remain viable. VIP was founded by many professionals and interested parties who donated their time and expertise (and office space and phone) to make VIP's service available to people in the greater Hartford region for over ten (10) years now. We don't have easy access to funding, but nevertheless have been able to offer VIP's unique service. You may have skills, energy, ideas or commitment which could help us to continue to thrive. Successful volunteers also can have the potential to join our Board of Directors. Don't hesitate to call to discuss ways in which you might join us in our charitable work, making strictly private therapy available to people who earn those services through their volunteer work elsewhere in the community.
