Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on October 9, 2009

Join us in volunteering for the Art for Healing program, which utilizes expressive arts as an outlet for stress and anxiety in the hospital setting. It is a creative process that uses the imagination to express, document, and transform our experiences, promote wellness, and may also heighten one's sense of empowerment and purpose. We will train volunteers to be a Creative Coach in assisting patients to process their experiences. Projects may include collage, writing, drawing or painting with various media or props depending on the needs of the patient.
Patients who have participated in the program have shared these comments:
-"It was very nurturing for me. I enjoyed the sharing of stories as well as the process of creating. I gained a new awareness of the cycles in life."

  • "When I concentrate on the painting I block everything else out - I enjoy it very much - it makes my treatment go faster."
  • "Very helpful. Felt better about myself this session; stronger to deal with problems."
  • Some artistic ability is suitable but not necessary. Skill in engaging and interacting with patients from various backgrounds is required. Volunteer training consists of 6 hours orientation and role-playing, and 3 shifts of shadowing with the Artist-in-Residence on patient units.
