Active Sep 1, 2005 to Sep 10, 2005
The Charter Oak Chapter of the American Red Cross is recruiting volunteers who can commit to at least 2 weeks deployment to aid in the areas stricken by Hurricane Katrina. Our volunteers go through detailed training and have positions of responsibility in our organization. The requirements are part of what makes our volunteer corps such a unique and effective force. People wishing to deploy as volunteers will need to make a commitment of two (2) weeks service in the Gulf Coast area (maximum 3 weeks.) Individuals wishing to train and volunteer will need to provide a statement of general health before being deployed. All Red Cross volunteers are required to undergo a background check and to register with the Red Cross organization as a volunteer. Please Note: This is a HARDSHIP ASSIGNMENT: the conditions in which volunteers are serving include extreme heat and humidity, power outages, water shortages, insects, and no air conditioning. Volunteers are sleeping in shelters that house victims. Volunteers must be in good health and physically fit, able to work long hours. Must be flexible with last-minute changes and personal inconvenience. If you are interested and meet the above requirements, the chapter will provide SPECIAL TRAINING to new volunteers on FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, and SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, at its Farmington and New London locations. Registration is required. The training will run from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm on both days and will include general principles of disaster relief and an orientation on conditions the Gulf Coast region. The training is free of charge to those who commit to volunteer duty with the Red Cross Chapter. Attendance on both days is mandatory to be considered. Transportation questions are addressed during the training. We cannot guarantee dates of deployment. Please indicate availability, skills, experience, health status.
