The Farmington River Watershed Association is pleased to announce that Mike Beauchene, the skillful and often animated and humorous educator from the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, will lead both classroom and field instruction in the identification of aquatic insects. Mike has developed a program so that volunteers can scientifically collect, sort, and identify macroinvertebrates as an indicator of river health. The watershed association is hoping to teach volunteers about these important creatures and to recruit volunteers to join their watershed-wise monitoring program. Unlike traditional water quality sampling that provides a one day one time snapshot of the health of a river, the study of aquatic insects provides a long-term understanding of river quality. The Saturday, October 15th training program will be held at the Simsbury Apple Barn in Simsbury Connecticut. The public is invited to participate. No prior macroinvertebrate knowledge is needed: Just bring a desire to become part of a volunteer environmental team. The training session is part of a grass roots program aimed at developing skills of those who would like to be part of the Farmington River Watershed Association's ongoing effort to monitor the health of the Farmington River. Be prepared to get your feet wet, but rest assured that all will have fun as they look for the critters that indicate water quality. Lunch will be provided.
