Strategies for Change
Strategies for Change mission is to provide exemplary evidence based substance abuse treatment and mental health, co-occurring & support services for adults, youth & families to promote self-sufficiency, health & wholeness in a collaborative community setting. Vision: Families can break the cycle of trauma, violence and substance abuse; so to create a life that is purposeful and meaningful.
Description:
Strategies for Change provides fully integrated mental health and substance abuse treatment for individuals and families in the Sacramento area. Strategies for Change treatment philosophy is based on Choice Theory, which supports each person in identifying his or her strengths, values and emotional development so as to create a life that is purposeful and meaningful. People come to us, as whole people with a whole scope of issues. We work with that individual to develop a comprehensive, cohesive, workable treatment plan. A team of educated counselors and therapists support each person in identifying his or her strengths and increase skill and emotional development. Part of the education component within treatment helps people understand how addiction has negatively impacted their lives, and to help them understand how over time their substance abuse has became a way they learned to address unmet needs. In doing so we are able to empower people to explore alternative strategies to get their needs met in healthier clean and sober way. Treatment also includes coping skills, problems solving, effective communication, self soothing, and strategies to implement in creating a world going forward that is purposeful and meaningful. This core philosophy seems to resonate with most people. Adults and youth attending outpatient treatment at Strategies for Change tend to realize successful completion rates double that of State and County averages. Every year, almost 2,000 people select Strategies for Change for their primary path to recovery. In 2008 the organization was recognized as the Outstanding Nonprofit of the Year.
History:
Strategies for Change, formerly known as Chemical Dependency Center for Women was founded in 1978 under the name Women’s Stress Alternatives, with the original purpose of treating women addicted to prescription medications. Over time, an understanding of the complex needs of the family as a whole and of the children affected by multi-generational drug use and trauma has led to the development of a comprehensive array of services geared to support women, men, families and youth.
