Description:
We serve our homeless neighbors of Indianapolis by giving them a safe, daily haven and providing services that will not just help them obtain housing but will help them realize and reach their full potential. We provide many basic and professional services, including but not limited to showers, laundry, mail, case management, medical staff, mental health counseling, addiction support, job opportunity classes, literacy training, legal counsel and veteran's services. Horizon House always tries to obtain the highest level of hospitality and respect towards our neighbors, so that they can truly realize their worth. We work to provide resources, empower lives and end homelessness.
History:
In 1987 the Homeless Network of Indianapolis came together to assess the problem of homelessness in the community. They realized that there was a need for a multi-service day center that coordinated services for the homeless. In 1988 the Indianapolis Day Center was opened with cooperative efforts from Shepherd Community Center and the Salvation Army.
In 1994 the Board of Directors decided that they needed to further secularize the organization in order to broaden the scope of service. The Day Center ended their relationship with the Salvation Army and partnered with the United Way to become Horizon House. They formed a strategic plan to move to a larger facility in order to provide more services and programs. In 2001 they were able to obtain enough funding and put the plan in place by purchasing 1033 E. Washington St. and have grown to be one of the premier programs in the nation.
